Living room
Aim for a rug large enough that at least the front legs of your sofa and chairs sit on it. It ties the seating together and makes the room feel bigger. Leave about 30–45 cm (12–18 in) of floor between the rug and the walls.
Dining room
Measure your table and add about 60 cm (24 in) on every side, so chairs stay on the rug when someone sits down. A table for six usually needs an 8x10 or larger.
Bedroom
Under a bed, the rug should extend about 45–60 cm (18–24 in) beyond the sides. For a queen bed that's usually 6x9 or 8x10; for a king, 8x10 or 9x12. Two runners on each side of the bed are a good alternative.
Hallways and kitchens
Choose a runner that leaves 10–15 cm (4–6 in) of floor on each side and stops a little short of the ends of the hallway.
Measuring tip
Mark the rug size on your floor with painter's tape before you order. It's the easiest way to see how it will feel in the room.
A note on vintage sizes
Vintage rugs were woven by hand, long before standard sizes existed, so a "5x8" might be 4'9" x 7'11". The exact size of every rug is on its page, in feet and centimeters.
